Lincomycin is an antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections in people who cannot use penicillin antibiotics. It is specifically reserved for severe infections and will not be effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Here are some important points about lincomycin:
- Dosage: For adults, the typical dosage is 500 mg on the first day (as a single dose), followed by 250 mg daily from Day 2 through Day 5. For children aged 2 years and older, the dose is based on body weight and is usually 12 mg per kilogram of body weight once a day for 5 days.
- Administration: Most forms of lincomycin can be taken with or without food. If you’re using the extended-release liquid form (Zmax), take it on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. If you have the oral suspension single-dose packet, mix it with water and drink it immediately, using the entire dose.
- Side Effects: Lincomycin may cause serious side effects. Seek emergency medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling). Antibiotic use can lead to overgrowth of normally harmless bacteria in the intestines, causing mild to severe diarrhea, even months after the last antibiotic dose. If left untreated, this condition can become life-threatening. Other side effects include stomach pain, blisters or ulcers in the mouth, low blood cell counts, and more.
- Warnings: If you develop diarrhea during or shortly after treatment with lincomycin, contact your doctor promptly. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor advises it. Lincomycin should not be used if you are allergic to lincomycin or clindamycin.
